johar market (the most popular market of semarang)

mini-pasar-johar.jpgThe northern coastal harbour-city of Semarang, Central Java is a divided city – the old and the new. The old, being located on a coastal plain between two Banjir Canals, and the most interesting to explore. The new, being located in the Southern Candi hills, is the newer residential area and where most of the wealthy people live – the cool air preferable to the heat of the coastal plain. Semarang is a city full of history, culture, and a bustling centre for trade.

When I first visited this beautiful and historical city over fifteen years ago, I had prearranged my accommodation at the Metro Hotel in the old part of the city, near Pasar Johar – a huge labyrinth of market stalls where everything imaginable is for sale. My hotel was situated next to a junction of five roads, known as simpang lima, where the roads branch out into various parts of the city. Pasar Johar is a market complex and is a fruit lover’s delight. Rows of stalls join other rows leading into a complex of other markets right down to the canals, and the other side, into Chinatown.

A short distance from Simpang Lima is a one of the landmarks of Semarang, the old Dutch administrative building said to have 1,000 doors.

I think that number is a little high although there are a lot. The place is not used these days for any specific purpose and when Ika and showed up we simply talked to the man in the little hut at the entrance. I said I wanted to go in and he said the price of admission would be anything we wanted to donate. I gave 5,000rp.

The fellow took around and showed us the deserted corridors, stained glass windows and separate rooms. After the Dutch took off during WWII the building was occupied by Javanese fighters trying to make a stand against the invading Japanese.

I asked who was victorious and was told the Javenese were.….of course.

The guide showed us a metal cross-beam that had been split by a Japanese shell. On the ground floor of the building the Indonesian fighters had written inspiring thoughts on the walls such as We must stay strong, We must be smart.

Our tour of the building took about 20 minutes and it was cool to see a relic of another time. The building itself was built in 1863 making it 100 years younger than me. Man that makes me feel old!

sam poo kong tempLe, gedong batu

In Semarang, there is a Sam Po Kong Temple which is known to locals as Gedong Batu Temple(Kelenteng Gedong Batu). According to one story, during one of the Admiral Zheng He’s expedition, one of his trusted lieutenants, Wang Jing Hong, was taken suddenly ill. As a result, the fleet stopped at Semarang and they found a cave and use it as temporary shelter. Later, people built a temple to commemorate Zheng He at that site and it was known as Gedong Batu or Kedong Batu meaning ‘piles of natural stones used for damming a river).
Sam Po Kong Temple, Jl. Simongan No. 129, ☎ +62 24 7605 277. The beautiful Sam Po Kong temple (Gedung Batu) was built to respect the Muslim Chinese commander named Cheng Ho of Ming Dinasty who visited Semarang in the early 15th century. It was extensively renovated in 2006 to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Cheng Ho's voyage to Semarang.
Within the temple, there is a tomb which is venerated as the tomb of the Kiai Juru Mudi Dampo Awang ( The Venerable Fleet Helmsman and Admiral). It was believed that the tomb belonged to Wang Jing Hong. According to one source, he stayed for a time in Semarang after he recovered from his illness and he subsequently played an important part in developing Semarang. Hence, after his death, his body was entombed in the temple and venerated (kramat).

The Simongan land was later bought over by Oei Tjie Sien in 1879 (5 th year of Guang Xu). Oei Tjie Sien was the father of the philanthropist, Oei Tiong Ham, who was known as the “Sugar King” of Indonesia. Since then, the community could worship in Gedong Batu without being charged a fee and the management of the temple complex was handed over to the local Sam Po Kong Foundation. The parade itself was revived in 1930 and continued to be a major attraction to this day.

blenduk church

Indonesia is a land where different religions and communities live in perfect harmony. Nowhere is this more evident than in the famous Gereja Blenduk church located in Jalan Letjen Soprato in Semarang.

Semarang’s Gereja Blenduk Church is the oldest Church in Central Java and has become an icon of Semarang.

This Protestant Church in Semarang was built by the Dutch community way back in 1753. Since then, every Sunday, the Gereja Blenduk Church comes alive to the sound of hymns and prayers
In 1894 Semarang’s Gereja Blenduk Church underwent extensive renovation, under the guidance of W. Westmaas and H.P.A de Wilde.

It is the architecture of the Gereja Blenduk Church that is its very interesting feature and it’s on this account that it’s visited by every tourist in Semarang. Blenduk means “dome” and the large copper dome of this beautiful church is one of its very notable features.

Besides, the Gereja Blenduk Church in Semarang has other features characteristic of 18th architecture. The ground plan of this Church is structured on a Greek cross. It also has four pillars and a beautiful classical portico. When in 1894, the Church was being renovated the beauty of this Church was enhanced by the addition of two towers in front of it.

The interiors of the Gereja Blenduk Church are original and haven’t ever been tampered with. You can still see the chairs used by the original congregation. A huge organ in the baroque style of the 18th century will capture your attention, as soon as you enter the Church. This organ is really fascinating because it goes back to the 18th century. It can neither be restored nor is it working and it remains as a silent spectator to the Church’s glorious history. Note the iron stairs that lead straight up to the organ specially constructed by Pletterji Den Haag.

Once you’re done admiring the oldest Church in Central Java, you can tour Nillmi Building and the other buildings nearby built in Dutch colonial times that are equally worth a visit.(from www.asiarooms.com)
